Last week, at Feeding America’s annual Network Summit in Austin, Texas, more than 500 people from our network of food banks across the country and our national office witnessed a moment of great celebration as Walmart and Sam’s Club were named Feeding America’s 2010 Donor of the Year.
Feeding America president and CEO, Vicki Escarra, presented the 2010 Donor of the Year award to Margaret McKenna, president of the Walmart Foundation.
Everyone at Feeding America is thrilled about the award, as the impact of our partnership with Walmart and Sam’s Club is truly incredible.
As you’ll see in this video, 2009 was an outstanding year for our partnership. Throughout this past year, food donations from Walmart and Sam’s Club totaled to 116 million pounds. This was not only the first time a donor has provided more than 100 million pounds over the course of one calendar year, but the largest-ever annual food donation to Feeding America in the organization’s history.
We thank Walmart and Sam’s Club on behalf of Feeding America’s national office and the more than 200 food banks and 61,000 agencies across the nation that are able to provide more fresh, nutritious food to people in need.
Last fall, the USDA reported that 49 million Americans are struggling with hunger. Our country is in crisis right now and this could not have come at a better time for us.
Thank you to Walmart and Sam’s Club for joining Feeding America in the fight toward a hunger-free America. And congratulations to our 2010 Donor of the Year!
